Flares and Yokes
Horizontal stylelines can also be called yokes in Fashion Patternmaking and Draping, and here you can see how it’s used to hang other volumes such as fringe.
YOKES
(or horizontal stylelines) can be highly visible or very “hidden” fit details in fashion patternmaking and garment construction. For example, a shaped waistband on pants or a skirt versus is pattern drafted the same way as a yoke.
Most likely when you think of a yoke you think of a Western Cowboy style shirt with a shaped yoke in the front or back, so let’s start with that visual.
In Fashion Patternmaking or fashiond draping, “technically”, a yoke is a smooth, flat area on the bodice or skirt that anchors a garment to the body to hold other panels.
It is generally creating a horizontal seam across the body (if it’s vertical we’ll call it a styleline instead of a yoke)
—and then the yoke gets a panel of smooth fabric, gathers, pleats, or flares stitched into IT that creates and holds volume or fit to build a silhouette.
I’ve also added one about draping FLARES in muslin, and supported that with this ADDITIONAL video about designing and sketching with them….
MAYBE this feels so TECHY at a distance but it isn’t all about that. I hope you can feel that in the videos.
In all of my programs, whatever “technical” thing is (structure) becomes something you EMBODY and take in as aprt ofyou by letting that information wash over you…..
yes, now you are FAMILIAR with the CONCEPT….
And you can master it, but
the way we MASTER a things is by PLAYING WITH THEM!
WE LEARN THROUGH EXPERIENCES.
Pleasurable and playful ones.
It’s about the poetry that comes through when you engage with a technique.
And that’s what we are here for and I can’t wait to support you on your journey inPatternmaking Demystified.
THEY WILL IN FACT CHANGE THE WAY YOU SEE ,THINK ,DRAW ,WRITE ,TEACH and CREATE around fashion garments and costume.
*BEGINNERS
if this feels too far too fast, let’s start with understanding the dress form language in this video to get you started in fashion patternmaking and draping. In this video I walk you all around my professional fashion dress form and teach you the names of all of the locations on the body that we refer to in fasihion technical design, creative design, patternmaking and draping..
(note: you don’t have to OWN A DRESS FORM to benefit from ANY oif this information. The point is to develop a common language and way to talk about the body and fashion garments for fashion and costume design!)
