Model Drawing, Art Supplies, and Freedom in Figure Drawing!

Model Drawing , art suppies, figure drawing.... (VIDEO Below)

MODEL DRAWING is so much more than you think, until you’ve taken the deep dive.

INITIATION

I never realized what a world I was opening into, of expression, exploration and discovery, as when I started taking model drawing classes.

INVITATION TO an experience

I first experienced the transformative magic of Model drawing/ figure drawing/ life drawing when I became a fine arts foundation student on my way to be a fashion design major (and later full time fashion design professor) at Parsons School of Design, Fashion Department..

Then, as a professor, over 27 years of teaching /guiding students through model drawing exercises, live classes with live standing, posed models as well as fashion illustration for design courses and portfolio.

And the thing is….. it’s such an incredible space that we enter when we join a MODEL DRAWING CLASS and embark on the journey of discovery in personal practice or in a LIVE group studio class environment (i run one weekly online right here).

GETTING STARTED

It begins with a foundation, not a finished fancy piece!

The more you can allow yourself the wild, playful and free space to EXPLORE all of your edges and expressions along the way,..
the more personal, confident, and raw individual style you will develop.

AND this doesn’t mean sacrificing accuracy, either!
It ALL comes together, in the most beautiful way.

BEFORE WE GET SUPER DETAILED about the clothing, hair and face, for example,…

We REALLY want to understand that fashion figure.

How does the body move? How does it look when balanced on its feet? What makes it look ALIVE? How do we place the parts together on the page and “BUILD A BODY”, from scratch?

WHAT IS THAT STRUCTURE BEHIND THE FINISHED SKETCH that actually makes it WORK?

We explore and discover our foundation here.

ART SUPPLIES

As you’ll see in today’s video, we learn two things at once.

The only way we can learn to understand the fashion figure through model drawing is WITH OUR ART SUPPLIES!

Our art supplies in a fashion model drawing class ARTICULATE AND EXPRESS what we are seeing.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES

What is so incredible is that each paper, each brush, each charcoal/ pencil/ ink pen, pastel, collage, watercolor, etc.

UNLOCKS A DIFFERENT ASPECT OF OUR EXPRESSION!

EVEN digital art supplies (below)

But I highly recommend starting on PAPER for a fully embodied experience!

And perhaps this is an experience that can only be lived and not described.

TEChniques

There is so much to work with when capturing something so full of life and expression as the human figure, for fashion design or otherwise!

  • Light and shadow,
  • form,
  • anatomy,
  • movement,
  • balance,
  • contours,
  • shapes,
  • proportions
  • silhouette
  • line,
  • textures,
  • backgrounds,
  • composition,
  • environment,
  • drama and contrast,
  • emotion,
  • detailed information,
  • point of view,
  • perspective,….

On and on it goes.

Here’s an insight to some of those essentials:

(Below, Oil pastel, charcoal pencil on newsprint paper)

Because once you get a model with limited-time poses, you get to engage in a drawing for a certain amount of time, and then release it.  Its a great way to get lots of experience with less judgment and attachment, which frees you up to be more impulsive and instinct-driven.

MUSIC SETS THE MOOD

Working with music brings you in to a flow state as well.

Model magic (and all of my live courses) intentionally uses music in the model drawing experience to help you access this flow state and also notice the different moods that different music bring into your model drawing practice!!

INTUITION, INSPIRATION AND INSTINCT

A good model drawing course like Model Magic is going to take you into a deeply liberating, freeing and intuitive space where you feel like an artist and a creator. moving deeper and deeper into these roles.

A great model drawing course opens you up to playful and exagerated experimentation, both with styles and attitudes as well as with how you use art supplies….

And experimenting with papers, paints, pens, pencils, charcoals, and different EXERCISES

…that hone your vision and your way of seeing  yourself, your art, and the model in front of you.

ESSENCE,  EXPRESSION, EXPLORATION
