The Profile fashion figure has its unique challenges and tips, along with the front, back and 3/4 rotation. The Profile shows the silhouette from the side for designs that really need to showcase that angle.

MY method is CUSTOMIZABLE FOR ALL BODY TYPES!!!!

Once you get the basic down, you can widen or lengthen components of the body anywhere, as needed, to match the body type that you need!!!

Once you understand what is going on “inside ” the body, the balance, the weight, the anatomy and mechanics, it becomes much easier to layer on the garment details.

And if you feel like you can’t, email me at info@fashionillustrationtribe.com or tag me on instagram with a photo of the body type you’d like to match, and I’ll help you create that figure.

wash and line goauche gestures studies from Fashion Sketch Group online zoom figure drawing studio sessions
A series of quick studies from the online zoom studio fashion figure drawing sessions I host every week. WORKING WITH GOUACHE helps us tap into fluidity, easy shadows, confidence with a variety of media, and the opportunity to experiment with techniques in a relaxed environment.

Here’s what you’ll learn in today’s video:

  • how to draw, period. Tools you can use for a lifetime
  • pro techniques for how to build bodies, constantly, using a process that WORKS!
  • create STRAIGHT and POSED figure frawings for sketching fashion
  • take the “very -complex- human- body” and learn to break it down into basic shapes and components that come together in to a croquis that you can also use as a  template for design sketches or flats
  • draw along with me and create a figure that you can trace over again and again as a designing tool
  • debunk the myth that you need to draw “perfectly” (who does??) and see how the PROCESS of drawing and building up the figure gives you an “edge” and a deeper understanding of the body and how it works!
  • What is a “plumb line” or “balance line” and how it is used in fashion drawing for standing figures so they don’t look like they are tipping over! (i mean, how stylish is THAT??)
  • a new (and perhaps surprising) way to hold your pencil and approach the page to achieve new results and effects
  • lots of tips!!!

I use proportional lines for guidance to free up the figure drawing practice within a structure. 8 heads provides a balanced starting point from which you can adjust for drawing any fashion figure body type with a few tweaks, even men and children’s figures.

This is the foundation for so many things we can do!

how to use Mannequins and Dress forms for fashion designers
DON’T FORGET that your fashion figure has direct relationship with your couture client’s body or with your dress form- whoever that pattern is for, the fashion sketch is not only a vague idea- the more accurate you can sketch for the finished body, the more design problems will be solved already during the sketching process. Long, stretched out or other distorted proportions in your figure drawing will make it hard to reproduce your design for THE REAL HUMAN BODY. Learn to Match your custome@

Line and shape, I always say, are often confused for being separate things. I strive to teach and maintain that every line is simply the edge of a shape. This awareness lends MUCH MORE VISUAL IMPACT to your figure drawing and fashion illustrations.

In my intensive, comprehensive, COMPLETE FASHION ILLUSTRATION AND DESIGN COURSE (15 weeks), we’ll get you fluid and experienced sketching models and then start designing collections for them using all of my tips and techniques for rendering fabrics, textures, colors, skin, hair, and DEVELOPING YOUR STYLE at the same time.

Fashion Model figure drawing exercises layout by laura Volpintesta in colored pencil
I always remind my students that when laying out sketches on a page, overlapping and interaction of elements within the four edges of the paper are compositional elements that are important to take into consideration! Here the purple figure connects with the far edge of the paper, anchoring her into the space instead of just floating. Overlapping figures feel social, friendly, cozy, creative. Different colors for each figure make it easy for the viewer to differentiate one from the other in the jumble of lines. By Laura Volpintesta from live zoom sessions

A series of of warmup leotards fashion figures in a horizontal layout format, overlapping helps me to keep my proportions consistent for a group of fashion figure illustrations. Charcoal helps hold strong presence on the page without erasure, with tonal shapes and lines playing together. Again, composing the page is something that is always happening in the background.
